design questions and answers
Q: Linda of Undisclosed
Ms. Ellis, I have two questions for which I am anxious to find out the answers.
1. Your design was included in a book, "Clean Sweep Conquer the Clutter". I was so taken with your work on p. 78 and 79. Is there a source for the wire wall racks used in the pictures? If it is only through you, how may I order these?
2. Was that re-design a TV episode? If so, what was it called?
Thank you so much for this information. I have searched high and low for the answers without success.
A: Kelli Ellis
Thank you for your email. Yes, that design was an episode called "Bye, Bye Birdie", also featured in Newsweek magazine. The wire racks usedwere purchased from a wonderful store called The Container Store. But don't be afraid to look for items like these in "odd places". For instance, I've often used similar kitchen organizers and wall systemsin home offices! When your shopping for particular items, think"outside the box" and focus on your need not the products intended function!

Q: Alexa of San Diego
I loved your show! Beach Cottage is exactly what we want for our new La Jolla home. The wainscotting is the perfect touch. I want to know if I can paint my concrete floors with any paint or does it have to be a special paint?
We have watched the episode over and over, taking lots of notes. Looking forward to your next episode on HGTV.
Regards,
Alexa
A: Kelli Ellis
Dear Alexa,
Thank you so much for watching the new show, I'm very proud of all our hard work!
Specifically, there is a very special paint that you should use made just for concrete floors. Look for it in the special paint section. I purchased my can at Home Depot, and it is much stronger than normal wall paint. You can have it tinted as well!
Be sure to follow the directions carefully and your floor will be beautiful in real Beach Cottage style!
All the best,
Kelli

Q: Kate of Waukesha
What are your best tips for keeping a walk-in closet organized?
A: Kelli Ellis
Hi Kate! My best tips are to first sort, sort, sort!!! Give away anything you don't need!...Next assess what is used most often. So many times we put the "comfy clothes" in hard to reach spots...our shoes tucked under racks...etc...Then determine if your closet is large enough for a seat or storage in the middle? Can you see everything from the door? Chances are good if you can't see it you won't wear it!

Q: Chris of Milwaukee
I have found that I have collected many, many different items. I am fairly attached to many of my belongings, from college and sports memorabilia to computer parts and cds. How can I overcome my attachments and get down to minimizing my belongings? I know I could just get rid of things I havent used in a year, but I just can't seem to do it.
A: Kelli Ellis
We all have those items we "love" or need...Just be practical with your decisions. True keepsakes should be either stored for easy viewing or incorporated into decor for true enjoyment! Ask yourself how much joy does this item bring me? Then find a way to give yourself that same gift of joy daily by incorporating it into your life!

Q: Gary of Wauwatosa
Are there some simple ways to get my kids to pick up after themselves?
A: Kelli Ellis
Hi Gary, I too have children and I've learned throughout their childhood different techniques work at different ages! When they are toddlers, making clean-up a game is best. As they mature, you have to remember they are watching you! You'll find they will take care of their belongings as well as you do! If you both need a change and to pick-up, make a pact together!
