I heart HGTV

Thank you HGTV.com and I heart HGTV blog

Half the fun of the holiday season is checking out the homes of friends and neighbors to see how they’ve decked their halls. When it comes to holiday décor, we all have different tastes and traditions.

That’s one of the reasons I enjoy so many of the holiday shows we film each year.  But I think one of my favorites has to be “Celebrity Holiday Homes.”  In this hour-long special (which premieres Friday 8/7c), HGTV designers visit the real-life homes of celebrities and decorate them to the tee with a complete holiday makeover.

Not only do we get to see the designers work their magic, it’s always amazing to see how thrilled the stars are to have their favorite HGTV hosts decorate their homes.  And I’m especially excited that one of this year’s featured designers is the incredibly talented, Kelli Ellis.

Designer, Kelli Ellis

Kelli is an award-winning, internationally known celebrity Interior Designer and Design Psychology Expert. She splits time as an author, brand ambassador, educator, life coach, speaker, professional blogger and on-camera Designer. Co-creator of Interior Design Camp, Design Campus and Design Glamp home goods. Her new book, “Do I look skinny in this house?” debuts next spring.

I recently caught up with Kelli, while she was taking a short break from her hectic media schedule, to get the 411 on decorating the home of Lorenzo and Shawna Lamas for this year’s special.  Here’s the dish……….

5 Festive (And Affordable!) Fall Decor Trends to Try

By Kelli Ellis

One of the best things about the changing season is that it provides an excuse to update your decor, but there’s no need to break the bank transforming your home into a fall haven. Hit up sales and discount stores to get the most bang for your buck. Let the harbingers of fall — leaves, pumpkins, sweaters and warm scents — inspire elements of your interior design. Here are 5 fall trends to try that are affordable and festive.Leaf Motif

Leaf-themed table decor is everywhere this time of year. Each of these pieces were priced less than $8.00 at a local home goods store. A mix of fall-colored ceramics can transform your table. TIP: It doesn’t take much to hint at a theme. Don’t overdue any one theme and avoid the mathcy-matchy look.

Pumped About Pumpkins

Choose pumpkin pieces that fit your design style (pictured above: chic glass and crafty country). Place your pumpkins in high traffic spots, such as entry tables, kitchen islands, and coffee tables. Pumpkins can be used through Halloween and Thanksgiving with ease, allowing you to get the most out of your investment.

DIY Art: Turn simple prints into display-worthy Art

As we all know, the value of a piece of art is in the eye of the beholder — it can be perceived as a priceless work or a complete waste of money. Being a huge art lover, I’ve toured some of the world’s most famous galleries, and I am always fascinated by people’s reactions to art. Which brings me to art in our own homes. I cringe when a client asks me to buy art for them. Art is so personal, which is exactly why anyone can put together wall art that has meaning to them — and have it look great!
After a gorgeous summer holiday in Italy, I came home with stacks of souvenir lithography books, flyers and magazines.Eager to display them in a creative way, I hit up my favorite frame store. I measured my prints before shopping so I had some idea of what I would need. With two projects in mind, I gave my daughter the task of cutting out her favorite fashion magazine images. Meanwhile, I sifted through my many litho prints of Italy and settled on four.

Creatively displaying your favorite images on clips and wires, is a fun, easy way to change and rearrange your collections over and over.

I choose modern frames to complimentarily juxtapose with my traditional walls. The frames display the prints with tiny magnets on all four sides of the frame. So, not only did we earn some style points, but we also spent very little money and kept our project to under an hour!

Anything you can think of can become art! Create pop art from your yearly birthday cards from friends and family. Frame paper cocktail napkins from your favorite hangouts! The more meaning you infuse with your displays the better. Remember, art is in the eye of the beholder and your walls are your gallery…Be bold and be brave, it will payoff.

Design Camp: Atlanta

Home from fantastic and hospitable Atlanta and I have to say, I couldn’t be happier with the way Design Camp Atlanta went down! Needlees to say, I love my PIC, Lori Dennis…Couldn’t ask for a better business partner and friend! We had our 1 year anniversary (we met speaking in Las Vegas, Influential Women of Design Panel) Happy, Happy LD! Thank You Fox Theater, Hotel Indigo and Georgians.

As usual we met some amazing designers, women, men, mothers, fathers and fast new fiends at Camp. It’s beyond fulfilling for me to see how much we can inspire these men and women over the course of 2.5 days. For many of you asking me “How did Atlanta Design Camp go?”, just read these reviews, the first from a delight of a woman, Ryan, a new friend for sure….

It’s in the Details – Spain, Morocco and Lisbon Series

Malaga, Spain

My first trip to Spain was eye opening and so wonderful – I was open to new sights, styles and tastes. I was not disappointed in the slightest.

Whenever I travel I am always riveted by architecture and details. Snapping pics as we walked, toured and cruised – I am such a little child when it comes to the smallest details, but it’s the details that make the design!
